These guys froze their tubes off. Why didn't we think of this? Oh yeah. We're partially sane.

Tinariwen Blew Our Minds

Tuareg group Tinariwen played the Boulder Theater last night. They're from Mali, deep in the southern Sahara. We've been fans of theirs for a few years, but nothing prepared us for the experience of seeing them live. A lot of our friends were there and everyone I talked with said the same thing: "What the hell are these guys doing in Boulder?" I can safely say it was the best concert I've ever been to. The only thing missing was being able to understand the words to their songs, which tend to be about nomadic life and the struggles of the Tuareg people.

Here's a little clip to give you a feel.

Trumpet Nightmares

When I was 10, my mom signed me and my sister up for accordion lessons, probably because she played it when she was a kid. When I went into Jr. High, I asked to choose what instrument I wanted to play and I chose the trumpet, probably because it seemed, to a 12-year-old, to be the most manly instrument. I got pretty good, took lessons, played in school bands, the NY All-City High School Band (we played at Carnegie hall), and a few bands my friends and I got together. One of these bands did covers of Chicago songs. Hey! Give me a break. Nobody should apologize for music they listened to when they were 15! Well, back then we didn't have the luxury of music books from popular bands, so it was up to me to transcribe their songs and write out parts for the band members. I did this on a Panasonic all-in-one cassette/FM stereo console unit in my parent's basement. I'd sit down there for hours at a time starting and stopping my Chicago's Greatest Hits cassette and scribbling on music notation paper. It always perplexed me that their music was in strange keys, like C#, which have tons of sharps or flats. Why didn't they play in C of F like normal people? After weeks of transcribing, I figured out that my parent's cassette player ran just a little bit fast. My band-mates never forgave me.

I was reminded of this when seeing this video. This could have been me.

Barry, do you still play?

This post has been removed by the author.

I only play themes from sci-fi movies.

Barry, you could have been Miss Douglas? Wow. Impressive.

Almost as scary as the performance itself is the fact that despite the 80s hair, the 80s outfit, and the 80s musical selection, it actually took place in 1993. An enterprising blogger tracked down the actual Stacy Hedger and did a phone interview with her, in which she confirmed that yes, she was Miss Douglas, Arizona, in that year. http://blogs.pitch.com/plog/2007/10/stacy_hedger_revealed.php The pageant in which Ms. Hedger was competing was the Miss Arizona pageant -- the one that chose the state's contestant for Miss America. (No, Stacy didn't win.)

Douglas, Arizona: the Town That Time (or maybe George Lucas) Forgot.

Damn. YouTube says "We're sorry, this video is no longer available." I'll bet the soundtrack was that mellifluous corporate anthem, "My Bathroom Is A Special Kind of Place." Am I right?

Hmm. I can still get it.

Yes, this soundtrack is from the My Bathroom song. I sent it to an old friend and he worked his magic.

Pluto Just Can't Take It Anymore

A few years ago, 99 and I were forced, through family obligation, to go to Disney World in Orlando for a day. I personally, have always hated the concept of there being a "Happiest place on Earth". I mean, even if it were possible to figure out what is the happiest place on Earth, do you really think it's possible to manufacture it out of plastic, sponsorships and focus-group generated cartoon characters? The idea that you can shell out over $60 and be promised that "YOU WILL BE HAPPY" seems completely psychotic. In fact, this promise creates a very high expectation and tends to make unhappy feelings erupt from every orifice. To wit: when we were sitting at a cafe on Main Street, eating a cone of the happiest ice cream on Earth, we saw a nice family walking down the street, one of thousands, except that the husband was punching his wife in the head and yelling at her. Freakin' amazing. I don't think she was happy.

So, we now begin a new series entitled Disney Gone Wild. Here's chapter one:

How to Escape a Fart

Japanese scientists are at it again. It's obvious that this was a tongue-in-cheek (ugh!) video, but is it funnier because we don't understand Japanese?

Sure, if I had 5,000 Koreans at my disposal, I could do it too! We do this at our house every night, although it's not as impressive with four people and a cat.

Tie the ulitmate knot

I'm always on the lookout for a knot that meets all my rope-adhering needs. Finally, here it is. A knot that, given the right type of string/wire/shoelaces, cannot be undone. Perfect for tying your coworkers' shoes together while they're not looking.
